Batukaru Temple (Pura Luhur Batukaru) is a Hindu holy, quite and peaceful temple which takes place right at the slope of Mount Batukaru Bali. It is one of key temples in Bali that keeps the balance of Bali island. The temple’s name is same with mount where it built. Local people believe the temple built in 11th century devoted to the Hindu god Mahadeva, considered the master of the air, water and plants. Furthermore, cool natural forests and a pleasant sightseeing stopover such as the famous Jatiluwih rice field, surround the temple. Hence, many tourist both domestic and foreign come to visit the temple.

Moreover, In Batukaru Temple area we will not find any souvenir shops or art shop like other tourist destination. Hence, the temple area is indeed a place away from the noise and the purity is always maintained by the Balinese. Tourists who wants to visit Pura Luhur Batukaru must use a decent dress or hire sarong to keep the holiness of the temple. It is available for free at the security post before the temple entrance. For women during their periods are not allowed to enter the temple grounds.


The location of Batukaru temple is exactly at the southern slope of Mt. Batukaru as the second highest peak in Bali after Mount Agung. It is on Wongaya Gede Village, Penebel district, Tabanan Regency, Bali. Approximately 40 kilometers from Denpasar city or 50 kilometers from Ngurah Rai International Airport. The weather is cool due to the location at an altitude of 2.270m above the sea level.
