Yogyakarta Places of Interest – Borobudur Temple
Borobudur temple is one of the historical relics of Buddhism. It was founded by Mahayana Buddhists around 800 AD during the reign of the Syailendra Dynasty. But based on the inscription of Kayumwungan 26 May 824, Borobudur Temple was founded by King namely Samaratungga in the 8th century to the 9th. The construction process itself spent 75 years under the leadership of an architect named Gunadharma. In its development, Gunadharma has been able to apply the interlock concept of andesite stone which reach 2,000,000 stone blocks.
The Biggest Buddhist Temple
Borobudur Temple is the largest Buddhist temple or monuments in the world. Monument of Borobudur Temple consists of 6 square-shaped terraces on which there are three circular courts. There are 2672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues that adorn the it. We can find large numbers of reliefs in there. Hence,Borobudur Temple is as a temple which has the most complete Buddhist relief in the world. The carved reliefs on the walls are the compositions of 4 main stories. Those are Karmawibangga, Lalita Wistara, Jataka-Awadana, and Gandawyuda. The relief sculpture not only tells the Buddha knowledge and the journey of his life but tells the progress of Javanese society at that time. There are also 10 ships carved in the relief. It is a symbol that the ancestor of the Indonesian is a sailor.
In this temple, there are so many stupa. The biggest one is on the top of the temple. It is surrounded by 72 perforated supas. Inside of it, there is a statue of Buddha sitting cross-legged in a perfect lotus position with the attitude of the hand turning the wheel of dharma. This temple carries one of the concepts in Buddhism namely Mandala. Hence, the temple consists of 3 level, namely the world of desire or passion called Kamadhatu, a world of form called Rupadhatu, and a formless world called Arupadhatu. If we look the temple in details, it is like a Buddha sitting on a lotus petal.
