The Great Palace Complex
The Keraton Yogyakarta building with elegant Javanese architecture is located in the center of Yogyakarta City. The Keraton building stretches from north to south. The front yard of the Kraton name is the northern square and the backyard is the southern square. The History of Keraton Yogyakarta
In 1955, the Giyanti agreement divided the two kingdoms of Mataram into Surakarta Kasunanan under the government of Sunan Pakubuwono III and Kasultanan Ngayogyakarta under the government of Prince Mangkubumi well known as Sultan Hamengkubuwono I. Then, Prince Mangkubumi as the founder built the historical building named Pesanggrahan, in 1775. He chose the place right between the river Winongo and Code river, a dried marshy area to build the palace. Furthermore, Pesanggrahan Ayodya built into the Sultan Palace Yogyakarta or Keraton Yogyakarta.
The Structure of Keraton Yogyakarta
The palace complex is large. Beteng is a wide wall that surrounds it. The length is 1 km in the form of four square, the height is 3.5 meters, and the width is between 3 meters to 4 meters. In some places, there is an alley or a street to store weapons and ammunition. Furthermore, On the four corners, there are bastions with small holes in the wall to spy the enemy. Three of the bastions are now still visible. Beteng on the outside is surrounded by wide and deep trenches.
Regol Dono Pratomo which links the courtyard of Sri Manganti with the palace core courtyard, guarded by 2 (two) dwarapala statues named Cingkarabala and Balaupata. It symbolizes the human good personality, who always uses his conscience to always do good and forbid evil deeds. Moreover, In the palace core courtyard, you can see the residence of the Sultan used to receive honorary guests and organize parties. In this place there is also keputren or residence of the daughters of the unmarried Sultan.
Keraton Yogyakarta is open for tourist visit every day from 09.00 – 14.00 pm. except Friday, kraton closes at 11.00 am. Kraton Yogyakarta complex has 2 counters, the first counter is in Tepas Keprajuritan (in the front of North Square) whereas the other one is in Tepas Pariwisata (Regol Keben). Therefore, If you would like to see a more complete collection it is advisable to enter through Tepas Pariwisata.
Tourists visiting the Sultan’s Palace can also see various artistic performances such as macapat, gamelan, wayang orang, wayang golek, leather puppets and serimpi dance in Bangsal Manganti. The show starts at 10.00 am (Monday – Thursday), at 09.00 (Friday), and at 09.30 (Saturday – Sunday).
