Ponjok Batu Temple
Ponjok Batu Temple is one of Dang Kahyangan Temple in Buleleng regency. Furthermore, Dang Kahyangan Temple means a temple which was built by the local people. In order to give their respect and to remember toward the spiritual journey of Dang Hyang Nirartha. He is A Hindu’s Man of God coming from Java Island in the 15th century, during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong in Bali. However, no data are available for the beginning of the existence of this temple. The temple festival is held on Purnama Desta and Sasih Kasa Purnama Kasa based on Balinese Calendar. On the festival day or Piodalan, shere are some tourists coming to see the culture of the temple.
A Temple with Stone Boat Carving
The most interesting thing at Ponjok Batu Temple is the existence of a stone boat located on the seaside. This boat is not big, grounded by a strong rock and very purified. Most people visit the temple because of their curiosity of the small stone board. Local people in Bali believe that the beach beside of the temple is the starting point of Dang Hyang Nirartha’s spiritual journey to Lombok island. They believe that the Priest went to Lombok by boat with a fisherman.
We can go down from the temple through stairs to see the small stone boat. Furthermore, on the front of it, there is a cave-shaped coral. The place is special place for purifying our soul by using a holy water.
Based on the archaeological study, excavation and renovation done in 1995 for this temple. Then, they found a Sarcophagus made out of solid rock. Sarcophagus is a coffin used for the burial of ancient corpses.
The location of Ponjok Batu Temple is at Julah village, Tejakula district, Buleleng regency, Bali. It is specifically on a promontory where there are many stones whose gaps are overgrown with Kamboja trees. It is about 40 kilometers from Lovina or 35 kilometers from Amed beach. The best way to go to this temple is by joining a tour due to there is no public transportation pass the temple.
