Prambanan as The Biggest Hindu Temple In Yogyakarta
Prambanan Temple is one of the famous temple complex in Indonesia. UNESCO designated it as a world heritage site in 1991. Unlike the Borobudur Temple, Prambanan Temple is the biggest Hindu temple complex and the most beautiful temple in South East Asia. Based on the research, Prambanan temple was built in the 9th century during Sanjaya Dynasty under the leaderships of Rakai Pikatan. Temples in Prambanan Area
This temple is an offering to Lord Shiva who in Hinduism is known as the Destructive God. According to the Siwaghra inscription currently stored in the National Museum of Indonesia, the original name of this temple complex is Siwaghra. It comes from Sanskrit, which means the House of Shiva. Therefore, the main temple in this complex is Lord Shiva temple which has a height of 47 meters. The main temple is flanked by two temples of Lord Vishnu temple and temple of God Brahma, each has 33 meters tall.
Hindus call these three temples as the Trimurti Temple. Inside the Trimurti Temple, there are statues of each god. In front of the three temple god there are three Candi Wahana which represents the vehicle of each god. Wahana Nandi to Lord Shiva, Garuda to Lord Vishnu and Swan for Brahma. There are so many small temples and shrines surround. The total temple in the Prambanan area is 240 temples.
